Augmentative and Alternative Communications
Our therapists use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to aid or assist children whose speech and language is delayed to help them achieve every day communication. AAC is the term used to describe various methods of communication that can ‘add-on’ to speech and are used to get around problems with ordinary speech. AAC includes simple systems such as pictures, gestures and pointing, as well as more complex techniques involving powerful computer technology.
The use of AAC can help decrease a child’s frustration level and increase their willingness and ability to communicate appropriately. For example, AAC may help a child communicate their wants and needs, such as asking for food or drink.
